People say they’re “fine” all the time. But if you know the person well enough, you can tell if they’re really fine or not. You can hear it in their voice, their tone, the way they use their words. You can see the uneasiness in their eyes, the awkwardness of their movements, the lies in the curve of their smile. You can feel the pain they have inside, sense all those hidden emotions locked up unwilling to be set free, and yet, there’s nothing we can do about it… but ask, “Are you okay?”
